JOSIAH

Josiah took Cowboy to the back-country. The engine could spook the cattle so he opted to make repairs. The morning heat made a sweat breakout. A windmill water pump wasn’t functioning as it should and it was a necessary watering hole for the longhorns. The herd would move his way soon and it was his job to get it running. He parked the ATV and took off his shirt.

After examining the rusty mechanism, he tinkered with parts trying to unfreeze the metal. There weren't any bees in the gearbox. His upbringing and college education hadn’t helped him fix the pump. Hopefully, they’d help him figure out how to save the Double D.

The sound of hooves on dirt brought his attention to the distance. Brad Davidson rode toward him, like a cowboy out of the Wild West. His Stetson shadowed his sharp eyes. He wore a red plaid shirt and jeans and rode with authority. He dismounted, walked over and bent to inspect the work. Brad said nothing as he scanned the metal.

Josiah hadn’t expected to see him. “What’s up, Brad?”

“Have you heard from Jessie?” Brad took off his hat and finger combed his hair.

“She’s texted me a time or two.” Josiah raised his hand to shield his eyes from the sun.

“How’s it going?”

“Good.” Josiah opened a cooler, twisted the lid off a water bottle and downed it. He offered one to Brad who waved it off. There was a reason for this visit. Jessie’s father and Johnson were in the same book club; Johnson might have let something slip. Or Kuntz got out of jail. Josiah coughed and wiped his chin.

“Do you know what she’s doing in Austin?” Brad asked fingering the brim of his hat.

“She and Desire are peddling clothing.” He didn’t know the details but the amount of time she spent locked away had him curious. She’d never shown him any of the completed work and when he asked to see them she shook her head and blushed.

“Son, we’ve got to talk.”

That didn’t sound good. Josiah swallowed, heaviness clung to his gut. “You know more about the trip.” Josiah put his hands on his hips waiting.

“Yes and you need to hear what she’s up to.” Brad sat his hat back on his head. He launched into a story describing the sewing room, neglecting to mention the books. Jessie found patterns from her grandmother’s time as an exotic dancer. Classy, yet sexy, lingerie pieces had stoked Jessie’s curiosity. “She has talent for sewing, like Mom did,” he said.

“Wait, you’re telling me Jessie is making…”

“Negligees, bras, panties, you name it, she’s made it.” Brad’s face blushed speaking of his little girl’s handy-work.

“Huh. I didn’t know.” A slow smile found a way to Josiah's lips. The knowledge affected him in other ways but it was best to not let Brad see. He cleared his throat. Sawyer had been right. Jessie was a little vixen. “Why are you telling me?”

Brad sighed and stared at his boots. “She’s good. Desire called to let me know they have orders from two boutiques.
